Getting Around the Port

If you need to move between docks or head to the shopping area, white shuttle vans run continuously. These are free and fairly comfortable. To exit Dock 2, you'll go through a basic security check (ticket and bag inspection). While no one asked for our passports, it’s a good idea to carry a photocopy of your passport and Mexico tourist card on your phone, just in case.

Puerto Magico Shopping Complex

One of the main attractions near Dock 1 is the Puerto Magico shopping complex. This recently built mall features an array of shops, eateries, and a clean, welcoming atmosphere. Notably, the mall includes:

  • Shops: From trinkets to local crafts, there’s plenty to browse.

  • Dining Options: Enjoy snacks or a meal at one of the various food outlets.

  • ATM Availability: There’s an ATM affiliated with an established bank, perfect for withdrawing pesos.

  • Clean Facilities: Easily accessible restrooms make it convenient for visitors.

The center square of the mall is adorned with lounge benches, offering a relaxing space to enjoy a drink while taking in the atmosphere. For those looking for a local experience, a craft market lies just behind the mall, providing additional shopping options.

Leaving the Port: Transportation Options

  • Taxis: Just outside the port is the official taxi pickup zone, where set fares apply. These taxis are pricier than others in town, but they’re regulated.

  • Uber & Ride-Sharing: Uber is an affordable and reliable alternative, but it’s not allowed inside the cruise terminal. To catch an Uber, walk outside the port to a designated meeting spot like the OXXO convenience store or gas station. We found this to be the most cost-effective and hassle-free option, as fares are clearly displayed on the app.

  • Local Buses: At just 10 pesos (~50 cents USD), the local bus is the cheapest option. Keep in mind, drivers won’t provide change or accept U.S. dollars, so have pesos ready. Buses stop frequently, making them a slower but budget-friendly way to get around. They’re not ideal if you’re carrying lots of shopping bags or traveling with a stroller.

Grocery Shopping and Supplies

If you're in need of snacks or beach essentials, the area surrounding the port has you covered. Across the street, you’ll find large Walmart and Sam's Club stores. These are ideal for stocking up on supplies, though they can be overwhelming due to their size and layout. For those with mobility issues, consider sending someone from your group to shop.

Alternatively, the Chedrai superstore, located just a short walk from the main port entrance, offers a more upscale shopping experience with a diverse selection of products. It’s a local favorite and is well worth a visit.

Tips:

Inside the mall, you can pay in U.S. dollars at a store and request change in pesos—handy for small purchases around town.

This does not provide you with the best exchange rate, but if you only need a small amount, it is a good alternative in a pinch.

Nearby Attractions

While shopping is a significant draw, other nearby options include:

  • Galerias Shopping Mall: Located next to Walmart, this mall features a food court and a multiplex movie theater.

  • Casino Life Vallarta: Situated directly across the street, this small casino and hotel complex offers a different kind of entertainment.

Final Thoughts

Puerto Vallarta is more than just its beautiful beaches and romantic zones; it's a vibrant destination for shoppers and explorers alike. Whether you're interested in local crafts, unique food items, or essential supplies, the port area offers a delightful shopping experience within a short walking distance. With its rich history, convenient amenities, and diverse shopping options, Puerto Vallarta is a must-visit for anyone cruising through this charming Mexican destination. Happy shopping!

A Brief History of Puerto Vallarta

Puerto Vallarta has come a long way from its roots as a fishing and mining town. Its transformation into a tourist hotspot began in the 1960s, largely thanks to the filming of Night of the Iguana in 1963. Richard Burton, one of the film’s stars, famously brought his then-lover Elizabeth Taylor to the location. Their affair and eventual marriage turned Puerto Vallarta into a magnet for Hollywood glamour and global tourists. By the late 60s, infrastructure improvements—including new roads and an international airport—helped solidify its reputation as a must-visit destination.

The Cruise Port Layout

Puerto Vallarta’s cruise terminal is about 3.3 miles north of the city center and around 5 miles north of the Romantic Zone. The port consists of four docks:

  • Dock 1: The main terminal, home to the largest facilities.

  • Docks 2 & 3: Located just north of Dock 1, these accommodate additional ships but have limited facilities.

  • Cruise Boat Dock: Situated between Docks 1 and 2, this is where excursion boats depart.

If your ship docks at 2 or 3, expect fewer amenities, though you’ll still find public restrooms, small souvenir stands, and a tourist information booth. Pre-arranged excursions meet directly in front of your ship, and the sidewalks are well-maintained and wheelchair-friendly.
