A great port of call!
Initially, we had low expectations for Portland, UK, viewing it merely as a jumping-off point for excursions like Stonehenge. However, our experience turned out to be a delightful surprise. Here’s why we fell in love with this charming port town during our first European stop.

Unexpected Surprises
1. Castletown D-Day Center
Location: A short walk from the Portland Castle shuttle stop.
Significance: This museum highlights the area’s crucial role as a staging ground for D-Day on June 6, 1944.
Exhibits:
Highly interactive displays where you can jump into jeeps, handle authentic gear, and try on uniforms.
Items featured in films like Saving Private Ryan.
Knowledgeable docents enhance the experience.
Tip: Allocate at least two hours for this museum; it’s densely packed with information and activities, making it especially fun for families.
2. Weymouth Land Train
Description: A convenient land train that loops around Weymouth, offering an alternative to walking.
Benefits:
Affordable and perfect for those who prefer a leisurely ride.
Stops near excellent restaurants and live music venues.
3. Warm Hospitality
Community Spirit: The friendliness of the locals stood out as the highlight of our visit.

We were warmly welcomed by volunteers and residents, creating an authentic and inviting atmosphere.
The town's long history with tourists hasn’t made it jaded; instead, it felt genuine and friendly.
Final Thoughts

Activities: Stroll along the Esplanade Beach walk, enjoy carnival rides, and indulge in ice cream at local eateries.
Dining: We tried a delicious pasty at the Cornish Bakehouse—a hearty meat pie reminiscent of a giant empanada.
Note: Be cautious on the cobblestone sidewalks, as they can be uneven.
