Galveston, Texas, is a favored departure point for many cruise travelers. Before you set sail, here are five key points to keep in mind about the Galveston cruise port.

1. No Public Transportation from Airports
One of the first things to note is that there’s no public transportation available from the airports to Galveston. The main airports serving the area are George Bush Intercontinental Airport (over an hour away) and Houston Hobby Airport (about 45 minutes). While Hobby is generally more convenient, both require a taxi, shuttle, or rideshare service to reach the port. Rideshare options like Uber or Lyft often provide the best value.
2. Car is King
Most cruise passengers arrive by car, making parking options plentiful at the port and throughout Galveston. The port facilities offer various parking choices, often with complimentary shuttles. If you prefer to stay closer to the port, the downtown area is walkable, but hotel options can be limited and more expensive. Many travelers find it easier to stay a bit further from the port, where more affordable hotels are available.
3. Sidewalks Can Be Challenging
If you're walking to the port, be prepared for uneven cobblestone sidewalks that can be tough on your suitcase. Some areas may require you to lift your bags over curbs or navigate narrow paths, especially near the terminals. For smoother access, use 25th Street to enter terminals 25 and 28, as some parts of Harborside Boulevard lack sidewalks altogether.
4. Efficient Facilities (But Watch for the Booze Tax)
Once inside the terminal, you’ll find the facilities to be large and efficient, with plenty of seating, clean restrooms, and friendly staff. However, keep in mind that it can get congested during peak times. Note that Lyft is the only authorized rideshare service at the port; if you use Uber, the nearest pickup point is the Galveston Railroad Museum, located just down the street. Lastly, be aware of the booze tax—if you receive alcohol as a gift from the cruise line, you might be taxed on it when you return.

If you want to explore Galveston before or after your cruise, you can store your luggage conveniently at The Cruise Stop, located across from the Railway Museum. This facility caters to both cruisers and crew members, offering sundries and short-term luggage storage. Due to limited space, it's advisable to book ahead, especially on busy port days.
