Known for its breathtaking scenery, Flam offers the perfect mix of natural beauty and unique experiences. Whether you're visiting for the first time or returning, there's so much to see and do. Here’s a guide to help you make the most of your time in this charming town.
About Flam
Flam is located at the base of an arm of the Sognefjord, surrounded by majestic mountains and picturesque landscapes. With a population of just around 200, the town becomes bustling when cruise ships arrive, as many tourists flock here to explore the fjord. Flam is a tourist hub, offering hotels, campsites, and easy access to scenic attractions.
The most popular excursion is the "Norway in a Nutshell" tour, which combines a cruise, bus, and scenic train ride to showcase the best of the region. But Flam also offers plenty of other activities, from boat trips to Viking villages. Whether you have just a few hours or a whole day, there's something for everyone.
Port Overview
Flam’s port is small but functional, with a large berth that can accommodate up to three ships (with tenders). The dock area includes an administrative building with a crew lounge, a public restroom, and a tax-free refund office. A short walk from the dock takes you to the main tourist area, which includes cafes, restaurants, souvenir shops, and a tourist information center.
Directly outside the visitor center, you’ll find the ferry dock and the train station. There’s also a Coop Market across the street where you can pick up necessities. Flam is a tourist-friendly town, though be aware that food prices can be steep, so consider grabbing a snack or sandwich before exploring.
Getting Around
Flam is compact and easy to navigate on foot. If you’d like to explore further, you can rent electric cars from Emobilty for self-guided tours, or bikes from Flam Bike Rental. The town also has a bus stop with regular routes and organized tours.
For a more scenic experience, the Fjord Tours package allows you to complete the popular “Norway in a Nutshell” tour, which can be booked online in advance. But be aware—Flam is a popular destination, and many tours fill up quickly, so booking ahead is recommended.
Top Experiences in Flam
1. Flam to Gudvangen Cruise
Our adventure started with the Flam to Gudvangen cruise, a must-do activity for any first-time visitor. This sleek, all-electric ferry is a glimpse into the future of Norwegian cruising. Quiet and fast, the boat glides smoothly through the water, offering incredible views of the narrow Naeroyfjord—a UNESCO World Heritage site. The boat stops in the villages of Aurland and Undredal before reaching Gudvangen, a tiny tourist village.
In Gudvangen, you can explore the Viking village or just enjoy the small tourist area. We opted to return to Flam by bus, passing through several long tunnels (Norway is known for its tunnels!). The entire trip took around 3 hours.
2. Flamsbana Scenic Train
Next, we hopped on the Flamsbana Scenic Train, one of the most famous train rides in the world. If you're lucky, you might get the chance to snag a last-minute ticket—though it’s recommended to book in advance! The train offers magnificent views of waterfalls, valleys, and the surrounding mountains. Keep in mind, seats are unreserved, so if you want the best views, get in line early and aim for a window seat on the right side of the train.
The train also stops at Kjosfossen, a waterfall that plays a key role in Norwegian legend, where Hulda, a mythical maiden, is said to lure men with her song. The entire round-trip ride takes about 2-2.5 hours and is well worth it for the views alone.
3. Flam Railway Museum
If you have some extra time, be sure to visit the Flam Railway Museum. This small museum is located at the train station and is a fascinating look at the history and construction of the Flamsbana Railway. It’s free to enter, and the exhibits are in English, making it an easy stop for those interested in the history behind the region's famous rail system. Plan for about 30 minutes to explore.
Other Activities in Flam
If you’re looking for more things to do, consider renting an electric car or bike to explore the area at your own pace. You can also visit the Viking Village near Gudvangen, or take a trip to Borgund Stave Church (about 35 miles away). Flam is also known for its RIB boat trips, which offer a thrilling way to experience the fjord up close.

Flam is a small town with a big heart, offering some of the best natural views in Norway.
