Eidfjord isn’t just beautiful—it practically slaps you in the face with its stunning scenery! Nestled in southwest Norway along Hardangerfjorden, this little town is the perfect base for outdoor lovers. While many visitors head straight for Vøringfossen waterfall or Hardangervidda National Park, we opted to stay in town—and were pleasantly surprised by how much there was to do!

Arriving in Eidfjord
Eidfjord is located at the end of the Hardangerfjord, surrounded by majestic mountains and the famous Vøringfossen waterfall. The port area is small and welcoming, with a quick walk from the ship to the security hut. The charming Voringfoss Hotel greets visitors, setting the tone for a delightful day of exploration.
The tourist information center is just steps away and is packed with valuable resources. Here, you can find topographical hiking maps, book small vessel cruises, and even rent bikes. Despite its small size, this center is your gateway to outdoor adventures.
Exploring the Town
Eidfjord is small yet enchanting, making it perfect for leisurely strolls. The streets near the port are lined with shops, restaurants, and galleries. Be prepared for the high prices typical of Norway—credit cards are a must!
For those looking to indulge, the Voringfoss Hotel offers unique dishes like reindeer stew. Just remember, dining in Norway can be a splurge!

Eidfjord has plenty to offer, whether you seek adrenaline or relaxation. Here are some of my top picks:
1. Bike Rentals
Renting a bike is a great way to explore the stunning surroundings. You can easily book a bike at the tourist office. Pedaling through the picturesque landscape is invigorating, although some areas may be hilly. Keep your camera handy for those breathtaking views!
2. The Troll Train
For a fun and unique experience, hop on the Troll Train! This guided tour takes you through the upper parts of the town and showcases the incredible vistas. Although it's a tight squeeze, the train is wheelchair accessible. You’ll pass Viking graves and enjoy stunning sights without the physical exertion of hiking.
3. Hiking to Eidfjord Sand Beach
For a more laid-back option, take a flat hike along the Eio River to Eidfjord Sand Beach. Follow the Elvavegen Road until you find the trailhead. The hike takes about 20-25 minutes and leads to a serene beach with crystal-clear waters—a perfect spot to unwind and soak in the beauty of nature.
Culinary Exploration
After a busy morning, we discovered a local food truck eatery that serves primarily the crew from the cruise ships, offering a Scandinavian twist of Thai Food. Nearby, a Joker convenience store provides a cultural experience with regional products and unique snacks. Don’t miss out on trying local candies!

Eidfjord is a breathtaking destination that combines adventure with stunning landscapes. Whether you’re visiting for a day or planning a longer stay, there's plenty to see and do. I was fortunate to return on a second cruise, allowing me to explore even more of this enchanting town.
